I recently received an email from Prof. Tim Spector, ZOE’s Scientific Co-founder, and it’s juicy. The House of Lords Committee on Food, Diet, and Obesity just released a report, and Tim’s in it! Sharing his expert recommendations, Tim’s email covers some mouth-watering ideas on how the government could help us all make healthier food choices. Here’s the scoop.
The Not-So-Sweet Truth About UPFs
The committee was formed in response to a troubling increase in diet-related conditions. Did you know that around 60% of the calories we eat in the UK come from ultra-processed foods (UPFs)? According to Tim, UPFs are food-like substances packed with sugar, fat, and additives, which “lack beneficial nutrients.” Not exactly the recipe for a long, healthy life!
Why We Need Warning Labels and a Sugary Overhaul
One of Tim’s major recommendations is to slap warning labels on UPFs, much like the warnings on cigarettes. He points out that countries like Chile already use black octagonal stickers on UPFs to alert people to what they’re really eating. Plus, he says, “The UK only has a sugar tax on soft drinks – largely due to the powerful and well-funded lobbyists employed by the food industry.”
Mandatory Reformulations – A Makeover for Your Snacks
Food companies aren’t about to make these changes voluntarily, Tim stresses, so he suggests enforced reformulations to produce healthier options. And no, this isn’t the “nanny state” but more like a helping hand, guiding us toward healthier choices!
A Hopeful Step Forward
The good news? The House of Lords is on board with these changes. They’re also advocating to make healthier foods cheaper and easier to access, which is a win for everyone. The UK government is due to respond in January 2025, so fingers crossed that these vital changes take root.

Join the Movement
Tim’s message is clear: it’s time to take control of what’s on our plates. For those of us passionate about making healthier choices, we can do more than scan food labels. Embracing a fasting lifestyle is a powerful way to balance our diet and give our bodies the reset they need. By choosing mindful eating patterns and reducing our dependence on ultra-processed foods, we can start a personal revolution for our health.
Let’s raise our forks (and awareness) to a healthier, more informed future. Cheers to change – and maybe a little more fasting!
